Animating the Ocean Baird Auditorium, 2 pm Featuring clips from the film Finding Nemo, production designers from Disney and Pixar discuss how Hollywood studios adapt ocean stories to bring underwater animation to life.

DC Crochets a Coral Reef Baird Auditorium, 1 to 2:15 and 2:30-5:00 pm for the workshop Margaret Wertheim, physicist, journalist and co-founder of the Institute for Figuring, discusses her one-of-a-kind crochet coral reef project – an effort that brings artists, mathematicians and scientists together to generate global attention around the plight of coral reefs. Wertheim's crocheted reefs have been exhibited in Chicago, London and New York, among other locations.

Werthiem and Dr. Nancy Knowlton, the National Museum of Natural History Sant Chair for Marine Science, present a talk about reefs, ocean conservation and the art of crocheting a coral reef replica.

Following the talk, audience members have the opportunity to participate in a crochet workshop (no experience necessary).

Coastal America Ocean Art Contest Winners on Exhibit Baird Ambulatory-Temporary Exhibit Gallery Earlier this year, the Coastal America Ocean Art Contest challenged students to create a visual expression of the ocean that conveys the importance of the global system through seven Essential Principles of ocean literacy. In response, students, ranging from grade school to graduate school, submitted beautiful, scientifically accurate pieces of art.

First place winners from each age group are on display.

Second Saturday Arts and the Ocean: Dive In & Pop-Up Ground Floor, 1 to 4 pm Pop-up book artist Carol Barton leads a workshop for little hands in the expressive art of making ocean pop-up books. Following the workshop activities, Barton signs her books The Pocket Paper Engineer, Volumes 1 and 2 at the Gallery Store.

Don't miss the opportunity to make your very own undersea pop-up.

Book Signing: Susan Stockdale In Front of the Children's Store, 1 to 3 PM Author and illustrator, Susan Stockdale, will sign her children's book, Fabulous Fishes, in front of the children's store from 1:00 p.m to 3:00 p.m, December 20th, 2008. Some prints from the book will also be available for purchase.
